Since taking her seat on the council, Hawkins’ major interests have been in town improvement and beautification projects.
Clerk Dorothy Clater, a council member since 1970, says she’ll make up her mind whether to run or not before the March 6 deadline for filing. She attributes her indecision to the difficulty of the job, adding that the townspeople don’t always appreciate or understand the efforts of the council members.
Updike, Giles Step Down
H. Taylor Updike, at age 75, says “I’m not going to run anymore. I got too old.” Updike cited health reasons for his decision not to seek another term. He has served twice this time and another term back in the '40s, Updike said.
A native of Rappahannock, Updike recalled that his “father was on for years and years until the women got on in the ’50s.”
