Hill owner-rider hurdle race at 2:30 (points count toward First Colony Trophy), the New Mount Marshall ownerrider foxhunter race over two miles of Rappahannock Hunt terrain at 3 p.m. and the 2Vi mile Ben Venue foxhunters race over timber at 3:30 (points count toward Seven Comers trophy).
The finale, the one-of-akind hound race, goes off at 4 p.m. Carter reports that he’s already received 40 entries, including Kelly Corbin’s Susie, who won the race in 1981 and 1982. If Susie or another of his hounds crosses the line first this year, Corbin could retire the trophy. Corbin has managed that feat once already as has Jack Bruce, Rappahannock’s dog warden and the county’s resident expert on fox hounds. Bruce’s dogs also have two of the three wins necessary for a repeat.
General admission for Rappahannock’s races is $2.50 with children under 12 admitted free. Parking is an additional $3. Spectators who don’t bring fancy tailgate spreads of picnic lunches may buy food and beverages on the grounds.
