Waldron and others are seeking help from lawmakers and businesses. “Hopefully, people will come to realize the plight of southwest Virginia coal miners and respond,” said Mrs. Waldron. “A lot of these people are willing to work: they just can’t find jobs. ”
The story of their diffi culties found a sympatheti< listener in Kreitler. “ thought wouldn’t it be nict and neighborly if our county could send surplus apples down there,” she recalled.
It only took one telephone call to orchardist Sam Snead to begin the volunteer effort. “I explained the situation to Sam and he took it from there,” Kreitler said.
“It was kind of touching and we felt it would be a worth while thing,” Snead explained. “We all have difficulties sometimes; we all have problems. I don’t think it hurts to help your neighbor out. Maybe it will come back to you later.”
