The rest of the group of students Maarit traveled with were mostly assigned to the Fredericksburg area, according to McNear. She came with approximately 12 teens from all over the world. Maarit is the only one sent to Rappahannock.
The students have no say about where they will spend their year abroad, McNear adds. They fill out applications listing their interests and describing their life style. Officials at Youth for Understanding send summaries to selected parents in America and let them choose the student that seems most compatible. “We wanted someone who was adaptable,” says McNear. She found Maarit is definitely that.
Maarit arrived in Rappahannock on August 3 and returns to Europe in early July. She has spent her time here enjoying country living, but taking it a little easy in school.
McNear says Maarit’s biggest challenge at RCHS is studying her academics in a foreign language.
Her level in Finland is more like that of an American junior college, as McNear explains Maarit’s studies. The curriculum here seems easy to her and she won’t get credit for U. S. classes when she returns. She Vtron’t graduate until she’s 20 because of the more rigorous Finnish course of study.
