According to the preliminary report on the 1962 Census > of Agriculture for Rappahannock, the number of farms in the county jumped from 266 to 313 since the 1978 census.
But that’s not necessarily a sign that farming is on the upswing here. “The number of big farms isn’t increasing — only the number of small farms,” noted Birgitt Thornhill, Rappahannock’s agricultural extension agent. She also pointed to the definition of farms used by the Bureau of Census as possibly misleading “any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were sold or normally would have been sold.”
