The teachers set the original “cash” maximum on each book at $6, but Brochu says one of her girls is reading the thousand page volume “Gone With The Wind”. That could earn her $10-$15, depending on effort. Other children have made only lOtf for skimpy reports on thin books, Brochu added. She admits she grades tough. IShe wants the kids to redly earn their “money.”
Each child has his bankbook hung from a wall display. In it is recorded the “pay” following each report. Brochu received the passbooks from Shirley Stalnaker at the Warrenton Jefferson Savings & Loan Association office.
The teachers are enthusiastic about the entire project. The children are reading more. They have learned proper business letter form from their appeals to the stars. And they're getting to be better at writing the personal comments in the part of the letter telling why they had chosen to write to this particular celebrity.
Plus for the first time in their lives, many of these children are actually in a hurry to get to class every day! “Anything from the stars today?” they all want to know.
