Returning east to the D.C. area, Leonard went from suburbs to country, ending up in Warrenton, painting houses. “And I was doing art work, countrylooking stuff. But it wasn’t what I wanted, what I’d done in the past. It was too commercial,” she said. “I like doing abstracts. Big abstracts. I like to start out and not know exactly where I’m going. I like for my art to be a voyage of discovery that takes me somewhere different, somewhere I’ve never been before.”

But it’s hard for an unknown artist to make a living selling big abstracts. Staying with friends, Davette made a sign for them, a thank-you for their hospitality. “People saw it and liked it and asked for more. And it was certainly better than painting houses!”
