The students are “paid” according to the length of the book and detail of their reports. Each,child chooses books at his own reading level in whatever category he or she prefers. If the kid wants to read all science fiction or all sports, it doesn’t matter, the teachers say— the purpose of the reading lab is to raise their enjoyment and understanding of reading.
Understanding is rewarded with “money” as they are tested through both written and oral book reports. They must be able to answer detailed questions about the book’s content.
