Federal crop insurance is intended to allow a farmer to receive indemnities equal to his premium payments. The Federal Government is subsidizing the companies which write the policies. So, all the farmer’s premiums should be returned to him overtime.

The policies are sold by private insurers but ASCS offices work closely with farmers to establish average yields.
