careful with the new polypropylene fabrics that have been introduced in garments, such as thermal underwear, active sportswear, knit fleeces and women’s lingerie. Few polypropylene fabrics can be dried in a dryer because they are very heat sensitive. So, pay attention to the care labels and cleaning instructions on these clothing items. Low-Salt Diets The talk about low-salt and low-sodium diets can be confusing. Salt is a chemical compound which is 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. Although the body must have sodium, most Americans eat much more than they need. On the average, a person requires less than 1,500 milligrams of soadium a day. But most ingest 5,000 to 7,000 milligrams a day. A level teaspoon of salt contains 2,300 milligrams of sodium. Sodium appears to contribute to higher blood pressure in some people. These people can help control their blood pressure by reducing the amount of sodium they eat. Since salt is the number one source of sodium, the avoidance of the salt shaker is a good first step in reducing intake. However sodium often is found in many unexpected foods. For this reason, it is important to read labels to find the chemicals that contain sodium and avoid as much as is possible. Household Hint Sharpen scissors by cutting a piece of sandpaper, once or twice, with them. Mortgage Funds Available The price of a new house is going up, but a new homefunding program should make it easier to find mortgage money in 1984. The Federal National Mortgage Association, also known as Fannie Mae, has announced that this year it will provide up to $1.6 billion for home mortgages. The mortgages will be available from lenders across the country and will feature adjustable interest rates with an option to convert into fixed-rate mortgages at a later date. Those who are buying a house should check with local real estate agents or banks. Volunteers Many organizations rely heavily upon the use of volunteers. Volunteers give of their time and talents to deliver services or perform tasks with no direct financial compensation expected. Volunteers: help meet community needs. Share their knowledge and experiences to benefit others. Give support to people and issues. Allow for greater accomplishments through “person power” and the amount of time they give. Explain organizational purposes and goals to others - which is good public relations.

Reduce the financial burden of the organization. Volunteers also gain personal satisfaction from being involved in activities they eiyoy. The big problem is Volunteer Burn-Out. A few people or groups always seem to volunteer over and over again until they are completely fed-up. The rest of the community can do a big favor and volunteer every once in a while so the person who always volunteers can have a rest. Everyone has the ability to be a volunteer.
