As of this week, the Gypsy Moth had not yet begun doing extensive damage in infested areas. Presently, the Gypsy Moth larvae are about a ' half-inch in length — too small to see the characteristic pairs of red and blue dots on their backs. Mature caterpillars are from IV2 to 2M> inches 'long.
Tree defoliation will probably begin in scattered locations late this week or next week as the Gypsy , Moth caterpillars mature and develop voracious appetites.
The young caterpillars may be eating some leaf material now, but they’re probably just eating holes in . leaves - not the entire leaf. Homeowners may justify spraying trees in their landscape to minimize tree damage. Most any insecticide is very effective if you can get good coverage on your trees.
