The superintendent said that the administrative shuffle should cause “no appreciable change in the budget” for the coming school year, which has already been approved by the Board of Supervisors. “It won’t be the exact same amount,” he said, but should not differ significantly from the amount allocated.
Dr. Gangel explained that “it’s basically the same head count, just a rearrangement of responsibilities,” which will utilize more effectively the skills of the county’s school administrators.
The shuffle was accomplished by combining the duties of the elementary school’s vice-principal and elementary guidance counselor, which were previously two separate full-time positions. According to Dr. Gangel, the state has postponed its requirement for a full-time, accredited elementary guidance position for two school years, making the consolidation of duties possible.
In effect, Dr. Gangel said, the elementary school lost one half-time position of coordinator of special education, formerly filled by Vice-Principal Kathy Calvert, which was picked up at the administrative offices by the new director of pupil personnel.
