Changes in family life — such as birth, death, illness, divorce, and remarriage —that affect daily living and produce strong feelings will be explored, and students will be asked for examples of healthy coping strategies for dealing with the feelings produced by changes in the family.
Students will identify external body parts associated with reproduction and elimination, using correct terms. They will become aware that both a maie and a female are necessary to have a baby. The focus is on the concept that babies begin with a sperm and an egg.
According to the curriculum explanation. "this is an age-appropriate introduction to reproduction" and not an explicit explanation of the sexual process.
Students will be taught that a baby grows inside its mother's body for nine months and then is bom. "The extent of the discussion of the birth process at this point is dependent upon the students and the topics that arise," says the curriculum guideline.
Students will be asked to describe the types of behavior that gain or lose friends, and they will demonstrate how to respond appropriately to good touches and how to handle inappropriate approaches. They will aso practice the home safety rules that are part of the third grade health curriculum.
