Students will recall basic facts about sexually transmitted diseases and will be asked to describe the origins, effects, and transmission of the AIDS virus. They will relate personal hygiene to the physical changes that occur during puberty and be able to summarize the process of human reproduction and the benefits of postponing sexual activity- ityThey
will describe personal characteristics that can contribute to happiness for self and others, and apply decision-making skills to solving specific problems and determining the possible outcome of their decisions.
Understanding of child abuse and neglect will be expanded, and students will be taught about community health care and safety agencies and their functions. Instruction covers the availability of community agencies providing child abuse prevention, treatment of abuse victims, mental health and counseling, teenage pregnancy prevention and counseling, family planning counseling, prenatal care, substance abuse prevention and treatment and support groups, suicide prevention, and prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.
Students will explain the effects of substance abuse on the individual, family, school, and society, and they will evaluate the message from mass media related to sexuality and gender stereotyping.
