In some cities, such as Host on and San Francisco, community trusts have grown to as much as a half-billion dollars. In some cases, wealthy residents who have died without heirs have left their entire estates to the fund, “wishing that some good come to the community which they enjoyed so much," Mr. Dietel said.
“It’s all been done elsewhere," he said. “It’s just not been done here.”
The question, he added, “is what do you do to make it happen? What the other guy does is not important. It's what do, whenever you are in the world—that’s important."
“I would like," Mr. Dietel said, “to get local people thinking about what they can do with their charitable giving—and realize how little they really think about it."
Mr. Dietel’s talk, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Li- ; brary ami RAAC, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow at the Library.
