The VA hospitals do not provide general medical care (preventive medicine, insurance physicals, etc.) except where deemed necessary by the VA. Also, remember that nonservice-connected veterans are not given travel pay to a VA hospital by ambulance or otherwise unless such travel is authorized in advance.
Federal legislation permits the VA to provide specific medical benefits to categories of eligible veterans. These laws require that veterans have periods of service which are completed under conditions other than dishonorable. Also, these laws require a minimum period of service.
