The religious leaders and rulers together built absolutely enormous cathedrals in almost every township (at least it seems that way), with the city growing up around their prominence. Pictures cannot do justice to Salisbury Cathedral or any of the others. These architecturally fantastic structures sometimes took more than a century to complete. Entire generations of construction crews would see only a single phase of the pro- : - ject.
The peasants who did the actual building couldn’t even understand the services which would be held inside. The only effect they would receive would be an intense feeling of awe towards God, which is exactly what those who financed the cathedrals wanted them to experience. The peasants could see the Biblical stories depicted on the stained glass windows, but these illiterate common folk were excluded from the church services, where attendance was restricted to the aristocracy.
Of course, those practices have long been abandoned and now only the magnificent structures themselves remain.
If you can forgive the millions spent on the cathedrals while people starved, you can appreciate their beauty and history.
I’ve been to more than 15 cathedrals and abbeys already, and I can tell you that the fascination and interest doesn’t stop. How can you not gape at a vaulted and domed ceiling looming sometimes as high as 80 feet over your head? If you ever have the opportunity to go, do not pass it up for anything!
