The domiciliary and nursing home cafe may be provided to non-serviceconnected veterans (1) where such treatment is reasonably necessary for a veteran who is in need and (2) when the veteran is unable to defray the expenses of medical care.
To obtain medical care from a VA hospital, the veteran must provide proof of service. This is normally satisfied by the veteran taking his discharge papers/DD 214 to the medical facility on his first visit. Normally a VA medical card will then be issued which includes the veteran’s name, address, VA claim number, social security number, and name of issuing hospital.
Veterans should remember that the VA medical facilities are tasked by law to provide medical treatment first to those veterans with serviceconnected medical problems. All others treated are done on a space and time available basis. Those veterans who are treated for non-serv
