Fourth grade

Students will be able to identify the human reproductive organs and the physical changes that begin to occur during puberty. The harmful effects of teenage pregnancy will be discussed along with the importance of postponing sexual activity. They will also begin to learn about human fertilization and prenatal de-velopment.

The terms child abuse (including sexual abuse) and child neglect are explained as well as how to protect oneself and the importance of confiding in a trusted adult if inappropriate approaches are made by someone else.

Lessons will continue on dealing with emotions, developing a positive self-image, assuming responsibility within the family, and functioning effectively as a family member.

Students will identify the factors contributing to the use of drugs and recognize the dangers of substance abuse with the focus on misuse of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
