damage is more than likely the result of twig girdlers or twig borers that weaken the smaller branches. After the next windy day your yard will be full of clumps of maple leaves. The best action to control this pest is to rake up the debris and bum it or add it to your compost pile.
The Virginia Pine Saw-fly is also working on pine trees this week. Fortunately, these saw-flies don’t care for white pine and most pines used around the home landscape. You might notice pine trees along fence rows being defoliated by these saw-flies. If you look closely, they’re only eating the old foliage - not the new growth. The trees will seem completely defoliated and will miraculously recover as the pine tree pushes out its new growth in a couple of weeks.
