To the editor:
Travel outside the coi ntry prevented me from writing earlier to express through you anti your publication my appreciation to the residents of Rappahannock County for their support and assistance in the recent effort which took place to locate Charles Anthony Leaf II and to free his two hostages. It was a very difficult endeavor, not only for the law enforcement people directly involved in the operation, but also for individuals who provided ancillary support to the effort.
I would like to give a special thanks to Sperryville Fire Chief Ricky Lillard and Sperryville Rescue Squad Captain Richard Johnson who made available the firehouse which we used as a command post and center of operations.
During the entire operation, we received tremendous cooperation from the citizens of Rappahannock County. It would have been impossible to locate Leaf and his hostages without the information provided by the people living in and around Sperryville. They could not have been more helpful or supportive. The cooperative spirit of the citizens helped substantially in the ultimate resolution of this matter in saving the lives of the two hostages.
