Two E-911
plans eyed
by county

The county government has been negotiating with both Geographic Sciences, Inc. of Tampa, Fla. and Autometric, Inc. of Alexandria for mapping services for the Enhanced 911 emergency system.
County Administrator John McCarthy told the supervisors at last Thursday’s meeting that following negotiations he felt the cost of going with Geographic Sciences would be $100,000 including hardware that would be purchased for the dispatchers’ office and the comparable cost of going with Autometric would be $240,000.
He noted that the supervisors had been leaning toward going with Autometric, but added, “There is no way the surcharge could fund it directly.” He said the county could pay for Autometric’s system by taking money from the general fund and using funds from the surcharge of $2 per month on telephone bills to repay the general fund.
The maps provided by Autometric would be more detailed than those provided by Geographic Sciences. They include contour lines and cover the area in a more realistic way. They could be adapted for planning purposes to include such information as zoning category, forest cover and soil type.
Board Chairman Hubert Gilkey said, “I personally think we would be doing the county a great service in the long run if we went with Autometric. It’s a better system and it will suit the county better.”
