When the Revises purchased the property, they updated the electrical wiring and plumbing.
The interior was remodeled by the Rramers, who added wallpaper—Grieff quality, a museum collection featuring folk art—and accessories.
The Revises, having “pack-rat” characteristics, owned “lots of furniture,” which complemented the decor, said Mrs. Revis.
Mattresses and linens came with the purchase.
“We had no expectations,” said Mrs. Revis, adding they purchased the house thinking a bed and breakfast would be a nice way to augment their income.
The night they closed on their new home they had guest.
“We started on a real up beat,” she said.
Since then, the flow has been steady with many repeat customers.
“We’ve been very fortunate,” said Mrs. Revis, adding that with little or no advertising, guests have found their way to the house, many coming from local restaurants.
Rates are the same all year $80 to $100 per night.
Secluded from automobile and foot traffic, the dead-end location of the house could be a disadvantage.
But, the Revises have not found that to be so.
“It may be a disadvantage to those driving past, but once people find us, they like it here,” said Mrs. Revis.
The sense of seclusion is helped along by the lack of televisions or radios in the guest rooms. “It’s very private here,” said Mrs. Revis.
Although the Revis family lives at the rear of the house, they are separate from the guest house.
Living in one apartment—two small rooms—with their 3-year-old daughter Rate, a 21-pound Maine coon cat and a Rappahannock stray dog, conditions had been crowded, so the family extended their home, adding a living room, kitchen and bedroom area to the back of the house.
Reeping with the style of the home, the addition continues the arched porch exteriors and stucco fitcade.
“We had an idea of what we wanted for the house,” said Mrs. Revis. Following their desires, they’ve turned ideas into reality.
