Frohnmayer's
'own lunacy'

Paul Reisler recently wrote to this paper lamenting John Frohnmayer’s forced resignation from his post as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. He quoted Mr. Frohnmayer as saying his resignation was caused by “the lunacy that sees artists as enemies and ideas as demons.”
Mr. Frohnmayer’s resignation was in fact caused by his own lunacy in believing that offensiveness is “art" and that the taxpayer must pay for his selection of offensiveness.
Mr. Frohnmayer’s credibility as a person of artistic discernment was certainly called into question by his support of unpleasant and ugly works. But it was his continued assertion that the creators of these works had a right to be paid by taxpayers that lost him his own position on the public payroll.
