Generic drugs
are cheaper

Now that the 1992 session of the General Assembly has adjourned, I would like to share with you and your readers a positive action taken by the General Assembly which will benefit the citizens of Virginia.
The Virginia State Legislative Committee (SLC) of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) had as a major priority for the 1992 session of the General Assembly enactment of a statute that would change prescription forms for medicine from a two line signature form to a single line form.
The purpose of this change is to enhance the use of generic drugs rather than brand name drugs in situations where generic drugs are . available. Generic drugs usually cost from 30-50 percent less than brand name drugs.
Djel. Shirley Cooper of Yorktown patroned House Bill 71 which proposed the above change in the law. The bill was co-patroned by Del. Harvey Morgan, a pharmacist from Gloucester. Del. Jerry Wood, a pharmacist from Warrenton, worked very closely with Del. Cooper as the bill was considered by sub-committees and full committees of the General Assembly.
Based on the experience in several other states that have recently instituted the single line prescription form, it is estimated that in Virginia approximately $73 million could be saved annually by consumers. This new law becomes effective Jan. 1,1993.

First we want to apologize for the delay in writing this thank you. Several weekends ago our family was having breakfast in the Appetite Repair Shop (there were several Sperryville Rescue Squad workers there) when suddenly our 18-monthold grandson started choking and vomiting. In a flash Chris Payne, one of our young volunteer workers, was over to him and doing a marvelous job of assisting our daughter with the child. He stayed with P.J. until he knew he was completely OK. Our many thanks to Chris for his quickly doing a fine job. May God continue to bless you and the other rescue workers.
