The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR, honored seven area students from Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties at a tea for them and their families on Sunday afternoon March 8 at the Culpeper Baptist Church in Culpeper.
Three of them were American History Essay Contest winners, a yearly nationally sponsored contest by the DAR for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders during February, American History month. Four were the winners of the DAR Good Citizen Awards, also an annual nationally-sponsored contest by the DAR for high school seniors.
Mrs. Dieter Knuepfer, chairman of the American History Month Committee, spoke of the requirements the essayists had to follow, and that this year’s subject was “Women in the Revolution.” She awarded to each winner their certificate of achievement and medal, the latter being pinned on by his or her mother.
The three winners were: Jennifer Marie Jones, fifth grade, Madison County Elementary School, who wrote on Betsy Ross; Wesley Welk, sixth grade, Rappahannock County Elementary School, who wrote on Margaret Corbin; and Charles Landon Hutt, sixth grade, Wakefield Country Day School, Rappahan
