tant role in saving many of these animals’ lives. This county has caught up quickly and surpassed many communities in programs to promote animal welfare. It is only in the past couple of years that we have had any animal shelter at all.
The need to find homes for lost and doomed pets goes beyond town and district lines; it spans economic and social cliques; it directly affects the sensibilities of every humane person in the county. By printing the photos of these animals every week you are not only aiding those individual pets, you are keeping in the public eye the important work of the shelter.
We believe it would also be of benefit to the community for you to print stories about those who are prosecuted for animal abuse and the outcomes of those trials. We need to know that the hard work of those at the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League and the lives of the animals for whom they work so hard are being honored by our judicial system. Never again do we want to hear horror stories of people getting away with treating their pets in less than humane ways with the excuse that the animal is private property.
Any week in which you fail to heed the needs of your readers who want to see that photo you are not only turning a deaf ear to your market—the people who keep you in business, as well as the community you say you are trying to serve, but you are also ignoring the cries of the animals who need help. The picture takes so little space, surely there is some bit of local “news” that could be omitted or shortened to benefit those animals who so clearly cannot help themselves.

To the Editor: < Congratulations to Mark Scolforo, Editor of our Rappahannock News, for eliciting from Jerry Wood, our delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, the record of his voting in the recent session, revealing his personal accomplishments as well as his gaffes. If only our other representatives in Richmond and Washington, D.C. would be as forthcoming, think how well-served we would feel.
