The United Way of America has been fraught with controversy over the past several weeks. With the disclosure of President William Aramony’s salary, and his decision to step down, many have been asking questions about the local Piedmont United Way.
“One percent of locally raised dollars go to the national United Way for membership in the organization,” said Betty Roberts, executive director of the Piedmont United Way, whose headquarters are in Culpeper. “Dues of $1,850 are due in July. The board will look closely at the national situation before we pay that account.
“The services we receive far exceed what we pay in dollars,” she continued. Included in the services that United Way chapters receive are NFL and CNN advertisments, reduced prices on printed paper goods, and involvement in programs like “Gifts-In-Kind,” which supplies community 501(C)3 organizations with computer software at a fraction of the cost.
The Piedmont United Way serves 28 agencies in the five counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
Included in those agencies are Fauquier County Community Action Committee, which runs Head Start; Fauquier Temporary Family Shelter, which provides temporary shelter and support for homeless families; FORE, which provides vocational training and employment for handicapped individuals, and Services to Abused Families, which provides crisis intervention and ongoing support for battered women
