Thanks to recent Virginia General Assembly approval of $100,000 in grant monies, the planning process will begin in earnest toward opening a Regional Academic-Year Governor’s School for seven school divisions, including Fauquier County Public Schools. Joining Fauquier County in seeking the grant monies were school divisions in Clarke, Culpeper, Frederick, Rappahannock, Warren and Winchester City. Lord Fairfax Community College is also participating in this initiative as a possible site and as support for curriculum decisions.
Superintendent of schools Dr. Bob Chappell, who has been attending these joint meetings, is enthusiastic with the progress.
“We are pleased the General Assembly approved the planning grant for a Governor’s School for our region.
The northwest region of ' Virginia is one of the few areas of the state that does not have a Governor’s School program for academically talented students. We like the concept envisioned for this school of students participating in a half day Governor’s School program and a half day at their own high school, as this promotes student involvement in the academic, athletic, and fine arts opportu, nities at their high school. We also appreciate the willingness of LFCC to partner with the schools in our region to host the Governor’s School.
Attending Governor’s School on the LFCC campus will give our students a structured transition to college life,” commented Chappell.
