Petty remembers a child who came to the library to read to the dogs with excellent reading skills, but no interest in books. Being able to spend time with the dogs and making reading a more active subject sparked something in the child. “He came to just about every session that we had and his mother was impressed that he actually enjoyed reading to Jazz (Petty’s dog),” said Petty.
Last Friday ah open house was held at the Rappahannock County 4H office in Washington, Va. in an attempt to encourage parents to register their children to read to the dogs. Sessions will be held at this location on the second Friday of each month from 4-6 p. m.
Pre-registration is required. For information about registering or becoming a member of the Books and Barks Partners please call Sally Petty at 540-987-9632 or e-mail books_n_barks@yahoo.co m.
