First graders at Hearthstone School began the program.
They had spent weeks creating their artwork and poetry, telling the story of “frozen frogsicles,” which arise in our countryside every year from their frozen slumber, awakening us all with their joyful spring choruses.
One by one, the children would come to the stage and share their poetry. Themes of life, war, humor, nature and a wide range of human experiences were spoken aloud to a captivated audience. The silence was so deep one could hear a pin drop.
Poetry is a unique language and art form that is transformative as the poem is able to communicate and touch people’s hearts and minds in a way that ordinary language is not.
One poem that particularly evoked an empathetic chord in the audience was from Brian Turley, a junior high student from Hearthstone, who wrote a poem called “Dark
