We must have clairvoyant readers! We were planning this column a few weeks ago when we heard from Marshall Jones about some of his late winter bird sightings.
He wrote that woodcocks were “peenting” and doing their unmistakable aerial “twittering” displays, and mentioned that February 12th is the earliest that he and his wife Clay have recorded this activity in their part of the county (Keyser Hollow bordering Shenandoah National Park). We haven’t seen or heard woodcocks yet, but we always look forward to it. Woodcock displays are among the milestone natural events of the season.
