males moving north ahead of females. Both male and female snipes will display during migration, but males display more frequently when they reach their breeding grounds in the north.

The snipe display is similar to that of woodcocks, with sudden rapid dives from great heights. They are also very noisy, but the noise in this case is a loud whistling or “winnowing” sound resulting from air moving rapidly over outspread tail feathers.
