lhe hrst vineyard at the winery was planted only six years ago, with the first vintage being produced in 2000.

Rappahannock Cellars 2004 vintage is the creation of a new winemaker, Stephen Barnard.

Thus, a great deal is new in Rappahannock County as the proprietor, John Delmare strives to “continue to make great wines that are set apart as highly recognized wines with consistent quality.”

While Delmare is a newcomer to the state of Virginia, he and his wife, Marialisa are hardly new in the wine industry.

Marialisa’s family began their wine-making tradition on the island of Vis, which is near the Dalmatian Coast in the Adriatic Sea.

Her grandfather traveled to America with the family tradition, passing it on to her father who settled in California.

While growing grapes in the Santa Cruz Mountains, in California, at one of the oldest wineries in that area, the Delmares sought to find a more friendly place to raise their family and to grow grapes.

They left California with their eight children and journeyed to Virginia in search of a place to plant their vineyards and raise the children on the farm.
