In Taylor s senior year at Kappahannock County rngft School, he and Anthony Clinedinst had the opportunity to enroll in a class called, Bluegrass Independent Study. Clinedinst and Taylor were required to compose, perform and write a paper on the development of Bluegrass music. Brooke Parkhurst was the special guest and assisted with the class. She introduced Clinedinst and Taylor to clawhammer banjo, (a style of banjo playing), vocal harmonies, Celtic music and cord progressions.

Through this came two very popular songs, co-written by Clinedinst and Taylor, “Bluegrass State of Mind” and “Thank you Kind Soldier,” the latter, was written especially for and performed during the Veteran’s Day program in November 2003,

Dr. Bob Chappell and Clinedinst performed it once again in the fall of 2004 for Veteran’s Day.
