St. Patrick, the patron saint . *reland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. After more than six years as a prisoner of Irish raiders, Patrick escaped to Britain, where he reported that God revealed to him that he should return to Ireland as a missionary. He began religious training, a course of study that lasted more than fifteen years. After his ordination as a priest, he returned to Ireland with a dual mission — to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert those who practiced a nature-based pagan religion.
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17th, is a religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century.
