“We will begin to develop administrative procedures that will include goals, objectives, curriculum, course descriptions, staff selection and the student selection process,” she said. “Also, a Program Planning Board will be established. The proposed program will be taken to the Department of Education for review and then sent to the Board of Education for its recommendation for designation, with appropriate funding, as a Governor’s School.”
Last spring parents, students, teachers and professional staff were surveyed to determine interest in a Regional Governor’s School. The survey revealed a clear need for a governor’s school in this region with a focus on mathematics, science and technology. Survey participants preferred a 9th-12th grade configuration, possibly at multiple sites to reduce student travel time. Preliminary plans call for a part-day, rather than full-day, program in order for students to maintain connections with their base high school.
Barents and students have consistently demanded an additional service delivery model that provides gifted and talented learners with an accelerated and integrated curriculum. The design of the program will focus on a community of learners with a rigorous preparatory program that will be responsive to individual student differences and unique learning needs and allow students to be academically competitive when applying to colleges and universities.
Superintendents in the participating school divisions were unanimous in their support for further pursuit of an AcademicYear Regional Governor’s School. This area is the only geographical region in the Commonwealth that does not offer access to an Academic-Year Governor’s School.
