I don’t remember exactly when
I discovered I was Irish. The importance of being Irish was not something stressed in my parents’ home. They were of the generation that strove to leave immigrant roots behind and join the melting-pot middle class as plain-vanilla Americans. They recalled too vividly the “No Irish Need Apply” mentality of earlier years that treated their parents as second-class citizens.
