JJurrng meals the head of the household, usually a man sat in the chair. E veryone else either sat on the flcor or sat on a backless bench. If there was a guest at mealtime they were given the honor of sitting in the chair. Once again this was usually a man. Thus today we use the terms “Chairman” or “Chairman of the Board” to denote the head of an organization, business, committee, etc.
While thinking about the early homes in this country, did you ever wonder why there were no closets? Upon reading the notes kept by an Englishman who was visiting the colonies in the late 17th century I found that this amazed him also.
He quickly learned that the taxes on homes at that time were based on the number of closets found in the house. Thus even into the 18th and 19th centuries we find that even elegant homes had few to no closets.
Of course the flip side to this is that today we prize the beautiful wardrobes, presses and cabinets that were crafted by master carpenters and furniture craftsmen to take the place of those pricey closets.
