And so I now live with an ethnic memory and a set of stories to live out. It is a memory of poverty and repression, a story of fierce determination to be independent and self-reliant. It is a memory of land lost and a story of new land reclaimed. It is a memory of people I never knew — peasants grubbing out potatoes on a half-acre of stony soil — w ho seem nearly as real as the people in my own story — kids with Irish freckles, some with red hair, who watch their father turn St. Patrick’s Day into a celebration second only to Christmas.
