“A lot of times kids are afraid to read in front of their peers, it builds their confidence when they can read to the dogs because they can make mistakes without feeling ashamed,” said Book and Barks founder, Sally Petty.

The program began in March of last year when Petty, with the help of children’s librarian Cindy Arbelbide, brought her own dogs to the Rappahannock County Library for children to read to. The idea really took off with Petty adding, “I wasn’t able to handle all the children who were interested.”
