1 he American Woodcock is one ot the oddest looking birds in a sandpiper family that includes many oddities. Plump, stocky birds with short legs, necks, and tails, very long bills, and dark eyes set far back on the head, woodcocks are never forgotten once seen. But they are typically shy and solitary, and only become a little more noticeable during their early spring aerial displays.
They range across the eastern United States, typically wintering south of here and migrating north to breed. The county is on the boundary of the wintering and breeding ranges, so we likely have them here yearround.
