My father, grandson of a pioneer who traded potatofamine starvation in County Meath, Ireland, for log-cabin subsistence in Scott County, Minnesota, would wear a green tie on St. Patrick’s Day, but that was the extent of his proclamation of Irish roots. I don’t recall a single party or celebration on any March 17 of my boyhood.
It was only in my father’s final years that I prodded from him the information on our ancestors. From a hospital bed, he wrote out what he knew about their immigration, how I would find the town of Trim, whence they came, and where I would find them buried in Belle Plaine, Minn. I went to all those places and began to understand my ancestors, my father and myself.
