The classic howl of hounds is expected in a foxhunt, but not a howl of pain.
That howl of pain was heard on Sunday, March 6, when one of Billy Dodson’s hounds was hit while crossing Rt. 522 during a foxhunt.
The motorist was never prosecuted as the vehicle continued traveling toward Culpeper, never stopping to check the condition of the hound that was hit.
Dodson, a resident of Sperryville, is a huntsman who takes care of the hounds and horses, maintains trails and jumps, takes care of race courses, and anything else that the landowners, who are foxhunters, want him to do.
Dodson has been hunting for 49 years all across the state, but mostly in Rappahannock County.
