The winemaker
Also entering the wine industry by accident is the winemaker at Rappahannock Cellars, Stephen Barnard.
His story began as a young man who had earned degrees in enology and viticulture from the University of South Africa in Cape Town and Elsenberg Agriculture College in Stellenbosch. Barnard accepted a part-time job as a winery tour guide in Cape Tbwn.
After working for several South African wineries, several whose existence dated back to the 17th century, Barnard decided to move to the United States to be a winemaker.
Although he was offered positions with several California wineries, he chose Virginia instead, “Virginia offers much more of a challenge because it is much more climatic, making it more difficult to create consistent wines.”
