After the word got out about the program Petty was able to recruit others who were interested in doing an activity with their pet. Member Jacque Tbwner said, “I thought it would give me a chance to do something good in the community and now I love doing this with Sadie (Tbwner’s dog).”
In order to be involved in the program dogs must pass a test to become certified by Therapy Dog Inc. and be at least one year old. Handlers need only a love of their dog and the willingness to commit to the program. “Any dog with basic obedience skills cah complete the training,” said Tbwner.
Currently the •Sperryville based Waggin’ Hearts Therapy Dogs organization (non-profit) has about 25 members, approximately 8 of whom are also involved with the Books and Barks program. Therapy dogs make visits to all kinds of settings including nursing homes, libraries, and schools in an effort to share their' love with those in need. “Every dog finds their fit,” continued Towner who explained larger dogs may not be best for working with small children, but may do well in another environment.
