Olive (Abigail Breslin) is a little girl who dreams of being a beauty queen. She has a chance to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Unfortunately, she must rely on her family of misfits to get her from her home in New Mexico to the pageant in California. *
RAAC brings “Little Miss Sunshine” to the Theatre on Gay Street, Washington, Virginia, Friday February 16, at 8:00 p.m.
It’s not the plot so much as the eccentric characters that drive and carry this movie. The cast ably brings those characters to life: Alan Arkin as the grandfather, irritable, crude and addicted to heroin; Olive’s brother, Dwayne (Paul Dano) disdainful and silent; Uncle Frank (Steve Carell) a dejected, suicidal Proust scholar; Ibni Collette as Olive’s mother who bravely tries to manage the chaos of her dysfunctional family members; and Greg Kinnear as Olive’s father, Richard, a stressed out motivational speaker who has pinned his hopes and fortunes on an unlikely book deal extolling the wisdom of his 9 steps to success.
