Hanger said in many cases therapy without castration has been found to be completely ineffective.
“The history of the program, the characteristics of these types of offenders is that they just don’t do it once,” Hanger said. “They don’t get over it.”
According to Dr. Fred Berlin, founder of the Johns Hopkins Sexual Disorders Clinic, said the use of castration may be a valuable treatment if properly implemented.
Berlin said offenders must be* properly evaluated and only certain sex offenders should be considered for castration. He said castration may not be effective in all cases and offenders should be examined on an individual basis.
“I think it can be part of an overall picture that in some cases can be quite helpful, but it’s (castration) not a panacea or some kind of cure-all,” Berlin said.
