Bill would deny bail to illegal immigrants
RICHMOND, VA. — In Virginia there are several bills before the General Assembly that deal with illegal immigration.
One such bill is designed to deny bail to illegal immigrants who have been incarcerated for felonies. Chief patron of HB
Del. C. Tbdd Gilbert (RWoodstock) said the bill is only a change in presumption.
“My bill only deals with a presumption that illegals who commit felonies should be held in jail pending their trial because they represent an inherent flight risk,* Gilbert said.
As a prosecutor, Gilbert encounters illegal immigration issues on a daily basis.
“He sees things in the course of his work that need to be corrected and this is one of them,* said Gary Frink, Gilbert’s legislative assistant.
Anti-immigration bills such as Gilbert’s have sparked controversy with immigrant advocacy groups. Mexicanos Sin Fronteras (Mexicans Without Borders) organized a senes of events to express an opposing side of the bills.
Legal groups also have spoken out against the bdl. Cristina Rebeil, an attorney for the Virginia Poverty Law Center, said if rbiw bill becomes law, it could be used to treat immigrants Ayustly.
