He learned of Dominion’s interest in the Rappahannock right-of-way on Jan. 23, when the utility released three new potential power line routes.
Besides the Rappahannock option, the Jan. 23 maps show an alignment that would use the Interstate 66 right-of-way in Fauquier and an option to bury a line, which roughly would track 1-66. Dominion and its partner Allegheny Power want to link a substation near Winchester with one near Areola in Loudoun County.
Dominion officials said they developed the Jan. 23 options partly in response to citizens who last fall attended public workshops on proposed power line alignments.
But the map released by Dominion showing Dominion’s existing right-of-way has caused considerable confusion. It shows a large portion of the right-ofway in Fauquier. As depicted by Dominion, the right-of-way stretches from Fauquier’s northwest comer near Linden, along the Fauquier side of the Rappahannock River, to Opal. Apparently, though, Dominion doesn’t own nearly that much right-of-way in Fauquier along the river.
